Significance of Ekadashi Vrat

According to Vedic scriptures, observing Ekadashi fast is equivalent to performing many yagnas and gives the merit of donating thousands of cows. The fast purifies the mind and body, and helps in attaining moksha.

How to Observe Ekadashi

  1. Begin fasting from the previous evening (Dashami).
  2. Wake up early and take a bath.
  3. Worship Lord Vishnu with tulsi leaves.
  4. Avoid grains, beans, and certain vegetables.
  5. Break the fast on Dwadashi after sunrise.

Why is Rice Prohibited on Ekadashi?

According to religious beliefs, a demon named Mura found refuge in rice grains on Ekadashi day to escape Lord Vishnu's wrath. Consuming rice on this day is considered equivalent to consuming the sins associated with him. Scientifically, avoiding rice helps in detoxification and gives the digestive system a rest.

Importance of Parana (Breaking the Fast)

Parana, the act of breaking the fast, is as important as the fast itself. It must be done within the specific Dwadashi Parana timing. If missed, the fast is considered unsuccessful. You can check exact Parana timings for your location on our Daily Panchang page.
