Spiritual Significance

Nirjala Ekadashi, also called Bhimseni or Pandava Ekadashi, is considered the most important of all 24 Ekadashis in a year. According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, sage Vyasa told Bhima that observing this single Ekadashi without water (nirjala) yields the merit of all 24 Ekadashis combined. It falls on the 11th day of the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha month during peak Indian summer.

How to Celebrate in Canada

Observing Nirjala Ekadashi in Canada is highly auspicious. Because local timezone sunrise and moonrise times differ, follow these practices:

  • Align Fasting with Local Sunrise: Start your vrat precisely at sunrise in Toronto (approx 06:00 local time), rather than following Indian Standard Time.
  • Perform Puja during local Auspicious Hours: Make sure to perform the main rituals during local EST evening/night windows as shown above.
  • Complete fast without even water (nirjala) from sunrise to next day sunrise
  • Waking up before sunrise and bathing in a river or with holy water
  • Worshipping Lord Vishnu with Tulsi, yellow flowers, and panchamrit
  • Chanting Vishnu Sahasranama or reciting the Bhagavad Gita
  • Donating water, food, and fans (pankha) to Brahmins
