Spiritual Significance

Rongali Bihu (also called Bohag Bihu) is the most important of the three Bihu festivals and marks the Assamese New Year and the onset of the sowing season. It is a celebration of spring, fertility, and the joy of a new beginning. The festival is celebrated for seven days with communal feasting, Bihu dance (performed by young men and women in the fields), and traditional music on the dhol (drum) and pepa (flute).

How to Celebrate in Canada

Observing Rongali Bihu in Canada is highly auspicious. Because local timezone sunrise and moonrise times differ, follow these practices:

  • Align Fasting with Local Sunrise: Start your vrat precisely at sunrise in Toronto (approx 06:00 local time), rather than following Indian Standard Time.
  • Perform Puja during local Auspicious Hours: Make sure to perform the main rituals during local EST evening/night windows as shown above.
  • Bihu Husori — singing Bihu songs and visiting homes
  • Goru Bihu (first day) — ritual bathing of cattle
  • Traditional Bihu dance by young men and women
  • Making and exchanging Gamosa (handwoven towels)
  • Preparing traditional rice-based foods like Til Pitha and Sunga Pitha
