Understanding Vimshottari Dasha: The 120-Year Cycle

Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used planetary period system in Vedic Astrology. The term "Vimshottari" means 120 in Sanskrit, representing the total lifespan of a human being in the Kali Yuga. This system divides life into major periods (Mahadashas) ruled by different planets, each bringing its unique energy and karma.

Your Dasha cycle starts at birth based on the exact position of the Moon (Nakshatra). The balance of the first Dasha depends on how much the Moon had already traversed in the birth Nakshatra. From there, the cycle follows a fixed order of planets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Dasha sequence change?+

No, the sequence of Dasha is fixed (Ketu -> Venus -> Sun...). However, the starting point depends on your birth chart. Everyone starts at a different point in the cycle.

Which Mahadasha is best?+

It depends on your Ascendant (Lagna). For example, Venus Dasha is excellent for Libra ascendants but can be challenging for Sagittarius ascendants. Generally, Jupiter and Venus periods are considered favorable, while Saturn and Rahu are challenging but transformative.

What keeps happening during Rahu Mahadasha?+

Rahu Mahadasha lasts 18 years and is often a period of intense material ambition, confusion, sudden gains/losses, and foreign connections. It expands whatever it touches but can create illusions.

How does Mahadasha balance work?+

If you were born when the Moon had completed 50% of Ashwini Nakshatra (ruled by Ketu), you would have 50% of Ketu Dasha remaining at birth (3.5 years out of 7). Your next Dasha (Venus) would start at age 3.5.
